LAMBORGHINI TERZO MILLENNIO. THE FUTURE OF SPORT CARS
Developed through four pillars – Energy, Innovation, Powertrain & emotion - the Terzo Millennio was unveiled by Lamborghini in November 2017 as part of their vision of the future electric sport car. Mitja Barkert, Head of design at Lamborghini, shares some insights behind the creation of this unique concept car.
WHAT WAS YOUR GOAL WHEN CREATING THE LAMBORGHINI TERZO MILLENNIO?
Mitja Borkert: “We had the vision to create an outstanding statement of an all-electric Lamborghini. We wanted to throw the stone far into the future. We are future shapers and we want to innovate the automobile. At the same time we want to inspire designers and engineers. The car had to be exceptional and futuristic but also had to follow the strong Design DNA of Lamborghini.”
WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION FOR THE DESIGN OF THE CAR?
Mitja Borkert: “We were driven first by extreme proportions. It had to be the lowest and the most extreme electric car existing. Extreme proportions are significant for Lamborghini. The electric layout is also changing the architecture of the super sports car of the future. We decided for a seat position close to Le Mans or Formula 1 race cars. The super caps are moving to the front and the traditional engine is replaced by super caps. The electric engines are moving into the wheels. We have four of them. So we have all-wheel-drive, a strong tradition of Lamborghini. And we were inspired by Lamborghinis of the past, like the Reventón or Sesto Elemento. But we wanted to celebrate also one car that Marcello Gandini designed back in 1970. The Stratos Zero. Marcello Gandini started the Lamborghini Design DNA. We took also inspiration by airplanes and Race Cars from the 70’s.”
WHAT MAKES IT SO EXCEPTIONAL?
Mitja Borkert: “The car is exceptional because something like this doesn’t exist yet. It is very inspiring, especially for young people. We have presented the model at the MIT in Boston to start the collaboration with two laboratories for energy storage and new materials. The exterior carbon shell is supposed to house nano tubes for energy storage. That is something no one has done yet.”
HOW WOULD YOUR VEHICLE DESIGN TEAM DEFINE THE TERZO MILLENNIO?
Mitja Borkert: “It is stunning, futuristic and trendsetting, and it will continue our strong Lamborghini Design DNA.”
